How do I recognize defective tubes?

Brown spots, a milky precipitate (loss of vacuum) or no longer glowing tubes are immediately visible. More difficult to determine are "slowly dying tubes", in which the listening experience slowly changes. With aging preamp tubes, microphones, hissing and scratching noises creep in.

The curve of the tube relates the negative grid bias to the anode current.

After how many hours of playing time do the tubes develop their actual sound?
